Aurecon was appointed to undertake the feasibility investigation and design of the infrastructure associated with the Lower Thukela BWSS. The purpose of the project is to ultimately supply 110 megalitres per day of potable water to the residential areas to the north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The current design is for the first phase with a capacity of 55 megalitres per day.
Auercon also provided the necessary input to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and licensing process, in order to obtain the required authorisations.
The proposed scheme comprises of an abstraction works from a river, a low lift pump station, a desilting works and a water treatment works (WTW), as well as a high-lift pump station at the WTW linked to a 30 kilometre bulk supply pipeline and 30 megalitre reservoir.
