The 60 kilometre long Gurara gravity steel pipeline serving Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, was constructed between the new Gurara Dam and the water treatment works.
Aurecon was appointed by SCC Nigeria Limited to provide design services for the pipeline project, including detailed design and construction drawings for the pipeline and appurtenant works.
Aurecon also undertook design of the four road bridges over rivers required for the service road, which provides easy access to both the pipeline and to Gurara Dam.
Our main goal throughout the project was to produce quality designs and construction drawings which would save our clients both time and costs.
The thin steel wall of the 3 metre diameter pipeline necessitated very careful design to minimise the occurrence of both high and low pressures. Extensive testing of insitu soils and finite element modelling of backfilling options was undertaken to determine the most economical backfill designs. This was crucial to provide the necessary structural support for the pipeline.
For the bridge construction, simplistic, modular design solutions were sought, with all bridges designed to comprise simple concrete beams and a simple support system to ensure ease of casting and construction.
The detailed designs and construction drawings were completed within the predetermined budget, were cost effective and saved the client precious time and costs.
