Botswana is a large, arid country in which water is a limited resource and is central to the country’s development. It was thus not surprising that the Government of Botswana was concerned that their water resources were being degraded. Initiated in 2001, the Botswana National Master Plan for Wastewater and Sanitation was commissioned to provide the necessary planning and direction with regard to the country’s water supply. Aurecon formed part of the joint venture responsible for this significant task and provided all technical inputs to the project, including the assessment of existing works, future planning and the compilation of the Planning and Design Manual.
After establishing the existing types of sanitation and wastewater facilities as well as the capacity of the treatment plants in the various centers, a State of the Nation report was compiled. Along with population data, this initial investigation was used as input for a maintenance and capital expenditure budget for the various cities, towns and districts. Social surveys then revealed the aspirations and requirements of all the communities in the country in order to identify acceptable technologies in both rural and urban situations.
All of the information gathered was then incorporated into a GIS system to ensure its availability at all times. To compliment this, a Planning and Design Manual was developed to guide Botswana’s water industry and to ensure a uniform approach would be adopted by the participants.
The Botswana National Master Plan for Wastewater and Sanitation is a project that has continued to deliver multiple benefits to Botswana’s citizens.
