Aurecon to design Toowoomba Second Range Crossing to ease heavy freight on CBD roads


A design joint venture between Aurecon and WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has been commissioned as the design team for Nexus Delivery (Acciona and Ferrovial Construction Joint Venture) who are delivering the project for the Nexus Infrastructure consortium.  Nexus Infrastructure was awarded the contract by the Australian and Queensland Governments. 

The design of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing (TSRC) needed to demonstrate an innovative solution in effort to redirect heavy freight traffic out of the Toowoomba CBD.

Improving safety

Drawing from a strong team that demonstrates global capability and world class expertise, the TSRC project will deliver a second range crossing located north of Toowoomba that will see freight moved more efficiently. It will also significantly improve the safety of commuters by removing heavy freight vehicles from the Toowoomba Central Business District.

The scope of works for the Design Joint Venture includes earthworks, structures (including an 800m long viaduct), pavements, drainage and flooding hydrology, road design and environmental services.

The project includes:

  • 41km of new highway
  • Four lanes from Warrego Highway east interchange to Warrego Highway west
  • Grade separated interchanges at Warrego Highway east and west, Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Road interchange and Gore Highway
  • A grade separated connection to Mort Street
  • An approximately 30m deep cutting at the top of the Toowoomba Range will be constructed as an alternative to the tunnel solution in the reference design to allow all heavy vehicles, including dangerous goods carriers and over-dimensional vehicles, to use the TSRC
  • An 800m long viaduct built over the existing Queensland Rail line
  • Continuation of the New England Highway through a new bridge over the cutting.

The project is expected to be finished in 2018, weather permitting.
