Traffic circle on Nelson Mandela Boulevard, Western Cape, South Africa

Aurecon was engaged by the George Municipality to complete the planning, design, procurement and implementation of the construction of the major traffic circle located on Nelson Mandela Boulevard.

Besides strict construction timeframes and budgets, integrating the new traffic circle and road within the existing, busy traffic network was a significant challenge. The project team had to keep local traffic moving and flowing consistently through the construction area in order to ensure that the general public and local landowners were as unaffected as possible throughout this period. The project team also encountered uncontrolled fill in-situ in some areas.

In order to address the uncontrolled fill in-situ, the team excavated additional material and constructed a pioneer rock-fill layer as a basis for constructing the new road.

Working alongside contractor, RK Sauer Construction, the wider project team also included 18 local workers employed through the Expanded Public Works Programme principles. Aimed at reducing unemployment by stimulating local economies and improving skills through education and training, the labourers were employed for a total of 975 man days on the project.
