With Dubai’s highly ambitious plans for urban growth in the next few years, prominent developer Emaar Properties envisioned a financially viable and ecologically responsible city built for future generations. Thus, the launch of their Dubai Creek Harbour (DCH) as a flagship, mixed-use development project designed to provide homes to the city’s rapidly growing population.
Located across the Dubai Creek, north-east of Downtown Dubai, the DCH will feature a wide mix of land use comprising residential, retail, hospitality, office, community, and cultural facilities spread across nine district zones. It is bounded to the south by the Ras Al Khor road and to the north by the proposed Sixth Creek Crossing. An iconic tower will stand at the centre of the DCH, drawing in visitors and tourists alike.
“For developments like the Dubai Creek Harbour to flourish, a transportation system that integrates different modes of travel into one efficient, easily accessible and sustainable system is fundamental. Yet, while that’s easy to say, it’s challenging to define, model and future-proof such systems,” said Nadeem Shakir, Project Leader and Technical Director – Transport Planning.
The challenge for Aurecon’s master-planning and traffic engineering teams was to design a solution that will provide for a transport network capacity of more than 100 000 cars during peak hours, taking into consideration the limited access points caused by the creek surrounding the development.
“By tackling the last-mile challenge, a significant portion of the forecasted demand would be shifted to the public transport system with Aurecon’s proposed transport network. In this way, residents and visitors will be able get in, out and around Dubai Creek Harbour comfortably, safely, and in an environmentally sustainable manner,” said Nadeem.
The Multimodal Transport Network proposed by Aurecon includes the extension of Green Line Metro Rail with the provision of three metro stations located within the development. The metro rail stations will be integrated with a comprehensive network of feeder buses, encouraging connectivity to every single block within the development. In addition there will be a dedicated bus lane proposed on the bridge connecting the retail district of the development with the marine stations located within the mega-development’s Harbour Island.
The public transport network proposed by Aurecon will reduce the car trips by about 30-35%, and this will be a significant step towards the sustainability.
The DCH masterplan was completed in 2015.
