Aurecon Hatch is providing full engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services for the greenfield Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG) Coal Export Terminal (CET).
The first stage, with an export capacity of 30 Mtpa, has been operating since May 2010 and was the largest single stage development of a new coal terminal in the world.
Aurecon Hatch delivered the concept study, pre-feasibility study and feasibility study, and was subsequently engaged to carry out the full EPCM services including detailed design. Aurecon Hatch also assisted NCIG to tender for the land lease from the New South Wales Government and to successfully outbid three competitors.
A number of innovative techniques and features were incorporated, including wide bed stockpile designs using combined stacker reclaimers to provide 60% increase in coal storage capacity, reducing capital costs by about AU$160 million. Fully automated stacking and reclaiming systems will reduce future operating costs and exceed environmental requirements.
Only one lost time injury was recorded during construction of Stage 1 of the facility in over 4.5 million expended man hours. The project was delivered in 26 months, five weeks ahead of schedule, and under budget.
In 2011 Aurecon Hatch received a gold award for project management at the Consult Australia Awards for Excellence for the Stage 1 works.
Construction of the second stage is well advanced and will boost the terminal’s capacity to 53 Mtpa. This current expansion is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2012. Aurecon Hatch completed the pre-feasibility study, detailed engineering and is currently providing procurement and construction management services.
The third and final stage of the development will take the terminal to an ultimate capacity of 66 Mtpa. Aurecon Hatch is currently completing the detailed engineering and has started the early procurement activities required for this fast track project. Full project approval is in place with Aurecon Hatch engaged to complete the EPCM services for the expansion.
This project won Bulk Handling Facility of the Year (Resources and Infrastructure) at the 2013 Australian Bulk Handling Awards.
