Moatize Coal Mine Phase I, Mozambique

Some of the world’s richest coal deposits are located at Moatize in the Tete Province of Mozambique. Vale has held the concession since 2004 to explore coal deposits in this region for the next 25 years.   Aurecon was engaged to deliver the infrastructure for the first phase of the mine.

Aurecon provided a conceptual design for the mine, followed by detailed design of the mine infrastructure components, including, maintenance and administration facilities, conveyors, bulk water and electrical supply, new access roads, water treatment and rail loading facilities.

Aurecon’s responsibilities also included geotechnical investigations and project management, with a core team of specialists assigned to assist the client in the implementation of the project, construction of which is underway for completion by end 2011.

With a targeted production volume of 12 Mtpa of hard export coking coal and 2 Mtpa of export thermal coal, the mine will bring much needed economic growth to the region. The planned upgrade of rail and port facilities will also bring broader economic benefits.
