Stage 1 of the project provided the coal terminal with an initial capacity of 4.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), which will be increased to 7.5 mtpa during stage 2.
Stage 1 consisted of two phases for Aurecon, including provision of design audit and employer's representative services during the construction stage. Stage 1 also incorporated nine flights of belt conveyors, two barge unloaders, three stockpiles of 130,000 tonnes and one shiploader.
Aurecon developed the conceptual design which formed the base of the owner’s tender package, and has since assisted the owner in bid evaluation and design review for all disciplines, excluding geotechnical. During construction, Aurecon’s role involved weekly site visits by the project leader, as well as specialist electrical, civil and structural engineers when required. Aurecon’s role also included the preparation of regular progress reports and chairing monthly stakeholder meetings.
