Each country attending the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai constructed a pavilion that presented the most distinctive elements of their lifestyle and culture to a world audience. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) developed an architecturally designed building for the Australian display, incorporating a range of elaborate multimedia presentations.
Aurecon was approached by visual artists, ThinkOTS, working under DFAT, to develop the project through to detail design after being particularly impressed with our innovative work during the project’s concept phase.
We were required to provide a detailed mechanical and conceptual design and analysis for the Australian pavilion’s highly complex and impressive display, which involved translating the visual artist’s ideas into a functioning theatre stage system.
A detailed design for a presentation named 'Act 2 - Discover' was completed, which involved large video wall segments being raised and lowered from the auditorium floor and rotated around a central stage.
Australian lifestyle elements were presented on the central stage and interchanged during the show by lowering the platform to the basement where the set pieces were automatically swapped using a mechanical conveyor system.
Our detailed design used 3D modelling and structural analysis to eliminate the risk of any construction and operational problems DFAT the opportunity to see a full animation of the system before a single drawing was produced.
Our display successfully met ThinkOTS’ requirements and the fixed deadlines leading up to Expo 2010’s opening date.
The Australian Pavilion and award-winning 'Act 2 - Discover' presentation were well received by an average of 40 000 visitors per day.
The ThinkOTS 'Act 2 – Discover' presentation won two awards at the 2011 Audio Visual Industry Awards for Best Installation over $1 million and Best Audio Visual Production.
