The Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney underwent a redevelopment encompassing a 96 000m², nine-floor acute facility. The new facility includes a 600-bed, inpatient unit, spinal cord injury centre, emergency department, severe burns unit and 18 operating theatres.
Aurecon successfully delivered best practice electrical services to provide safe, reliable and flexible energy sources for optimal efficiency and comfort. The project was delivered under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The scope included the design of several high voltage (HV) substations and HV reticulation, implementation of the embedded 5MVA cogeneration plant, specialist medical lighting and power distribution, including a combined earthing system.
Aurecon produced a 100% redundant electrical distribution design with a dual reticulation network, which extends from the high voltage intake substation to the final sub-circuit at the distribution board. This allows either system to be offline, due to a fault or maintenance, and the hospital operation can continue with minimal disruption.
The design provides the hospital with a robust and continuous electrical supply during major incidents.

The Royal North Shore Hospital redevelopment was awarded a National Electrical and Communications Association Award (NECA) in the large commercial category for NSW.
