“Our service has included the complete range of building engineering services in every terminal, as well as airfield planning, pavement engineering and airfield lighting. What is most pleasing, though, is the focus our people have had on our relationship with the Perth Airport team,” says Stephen Logan, Expertise Leader, Airports, Landside.
Perth Airport Pty Ltd took control of this vital transport hub in 1997 and saw stable passenger flows until 2004, when numbers started to increase with the mining and resources boom. Since that time, passenger numbers for both domestic and international travel have more than doubled. Western Australia accounted for 46% of Australia’s exports in 2011, much of this dependent in some way on the airport. Perth Airport has responded by investing in substantial expansion of both terminal and airfield capacity. Aurecon has been fortunate to be involved in much of this new work.
Aurecon has provided core building engineering services (structural and building services) as well as environmentally sustainable design (ESD), fire safety engineering, security, logistics and risk management services. Our projects have included the AUS$85 million expansion of the Qantas terminal (T4), the new AUS$150 million regional terminal (T2); the upgrade and expansion of the Terminal 3 (T3) lounge, including a new Virgin Lounge (total approximately AUS$60 million). More recently, we have been involved in the conversion of T3 to use by Qantas and its related brands as Virgin have moved to new facilities in Terminal 1 (T1).
We have been heavily involved in the redevelopment and expansion of T1. The most significant project Perth Airport has ever completed is the AUS$300 million new Domestic Pier and International Departures Expansion, which opened in late 2015. Our team also worked on the International Departures Upgrade Project, the new T1 Forecourt and the recent Level 2 Departure Lounge.
Aurecon currently has a substantial team engaged in the early stages of design for the Airfield Expansion Project. This project will see the addition of a new third runway, as well as substantial taxiways and aprons. This will be by far the largest project undertaken at Perth Airport. It continues a longstanding involvement with the airfield, which has seen us responsible for the design of a variety of significant modifications including:
We have recently completed analysis and reporting on proposed Cat II / III Airfield lighting upgrades. Perth Airport has elected to install Cat III, lighting which is currently under design.
