Megabangna, Thailand

Megabangna, the first low-rise super regional mall in Southeast Asia with an everything-under-one-roof retail model, celebrated its grand opening in early May 2012. Aurecon was the design engineer for the THB 10 billion / USD 300 million project, making it the largest project by area ever to be undertaken by Aurecon in Thailand.

Boasting an impressive site of 400 000 square metres, shoppers can effortlessly navigate throughout the mega mall with almost 800 retailers separated into 10 zones and ground-floor free parking for 8 000 cars. The mall is equivalent to the size of 40 football fields.

The project was fast tracked for construction, taking 18 months to complete. Using a precast system, it has 16 metre span length hollow core slabs, shell beams and precast columns.

Thousands of columns on several grid systems with many transfer beams were required for the unique layout. The mall has a 70-metre height signage tower, providing a fly over view from Bangkok’s International Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Despite working against a challenging design and construction schedule, the use of 3D Revit modelling proved to be a highly effective and accurate tool for design documentation.

IKEA in Megabangna is the first of its stores to open in Thailand. It is the lead tenant and occupies a total area of 43 000 square metres within the shopping complex.

Commenting on the IKEA cultural phenomenon, Sakorn Kruemai, Aurecon’s Country Manager for Thailand said: “The opening of IKEA was a cause of major excitement for many Bangkokians. Previously they had to fly to Singapore and Malaysia, now it’s right on their doorstep!”

Developed by SF Development Co Ltd, Megabangna is a joint venture between Siam Future Development PLC, local lifestyle mall developer, Ikano Retail Centres, licensed ‘Mega’ mall operator under IKEA Group and SPS Group Company Limited.
