DHL Express gateway facility at Julius Nyerere International Airport, Tanzania

Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) is the principal airport serving Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania. It is about 12 kilometres southwest of the city.

In 2011, DHL Express, a division of the German logistics company Deutsche Post, which provides international express mail services, recognised the need for constructing high-quality airport infrastructure to better facilitate their operations at JNIA.

Aurecon was subsequently appointed to provide engineering procurement and construction management services for the design and construction of the new DHL Express gateway facility, which included a land side sorting and dispatching facility.

The client’s required useful life for the building is 25 years. This enabled life-cycle costing to be applied in several major construction elements, such as:

  • effective foundations in the presence of high ground water levels
  • the corrosion protection of exposed structural steelwork
  • imported Zincalume® profiled metal cladding materials
  • the maximisation of natural ventilation instead of mechanical ventilation, thus conserving energy
  • the extensive use of natural light

High ground water levels in the area proved to be a challenge, and the project team worked diligently to manage the basic ground and earthworks before the onset of the rainy season. Despite unseasonal early rains, Aurecon coordinated the foundation work in time to allow the remainder of construction to continue according to schedule.

The gateway facility, completed in 2012, now provides DHL Express with a modern handling facility within the JNIA boundaries, streamlining their efficiencies.

The DHL Express gateway facility is also the first development on the new JNIA landside park and has set a benchmark in terms of further development there.
