The Darwin Convention and Exhibition Centre (DCEC) is the focal point of the Darwin City Waterfront project, which comprises the redevelopment of the Kitchener Bay area at the end of the Darwin CBD peninsula. It was delivered as a private public partnership project by the Northern Territory Government.
Aurecon provided total engineering services to the Sitzler Laing O’Rourke joint venture design and construct team across the structural, civil, fire safety, fire protection, and hydraulic aspects of this multi-purpose convention and exhibition centre.
Aurecon identified key cost savings for the project, including recommending the use of a wind tunnel test. The resulting wind pressure reductions, in comparison with the Australian Standards, saved in the order of 80 tonnes of structural steel. A detailed fire engineering study also resulted in significant cost savings for the client.
The DCEC includes 4 000m2 of exhibition space, a 1 500-seat auditorium and 500m2 of function rooms. The roof area is approximately 1 100m2 with clear spans of 45m in the main exhibition spaces. A key feature of the Convention Centre is its ability to cater for a wide range of world class events.
