During the construction phase, we act as owner’s engineer to ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget and meet the expected level of reliability for long-term operation.

In wind energy, we have teamed with the University of Canterbury in New Zealand to leverage its mesoscale modelling capabilities commercially. We have applied this innovative tool to wind resource assessment to determine the commercial viability of wind projects across Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. This adds considerable value to these projects by shortening the development process, allowing preliminary assessments and layout design to be completed without the time and expense of erecting monitoring masts. This advanced modelling technology has also been applied to wind farm prospecting to identify the best development options with proven results.
We have provided specialist photovoltaic expertise on the ground breaking University of Queensland solar array project with its St Lucia campus soon to host Australia’s largest and most powerful array of photovoltaic panels. Featuring a 1.2 MW solar photovoltaic installation, the system will be capable of producing 1750 MWh of electricity a year.
Aurecon has also been involved in hydropower projects since 1957 and has undertaken projects in a number of African countries, including South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Uganda, Malawi, Guinea and Congo. Our hydropower capability is built on our core competencies of geotechnical and civil engineering, and water management, combined with world-leading skills in areas such as tunnelling. Aurecon is the only consulting company to have successfully designed and developed two small hydro power stations in South Africa in the last 30 years.
Aurecon is a leading advisor on bioenergy projects, combining our conventional power generation skills with advanced process engineering capability. Our services span the full project lifecycle from strategic advice and resource analysis through to risk assessment, design and construction management. We have advised on biofuels systems with a range of feedstocks including algae, dairy factory waste products and sugarcane. In addition, we have designed biogas production systems for land fill gas and other waste products. We have market-leading experience in biomass combustion systems ranging from co-firing of woodwaste in existing coal-fired boilers through to dedicated woodwaste boilers for cogeneration of heat and electricity.
