Aurecon women celebrated at NAWIC Awards

05 October 2015 - Aurecon women have received top honours at the prestigious 2015 National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) State Awards for Excellence, presented at award ceremonies throughout Australia during August and September.

Now in its 20th year in Australia, the NAWIC Awards celebrate inspirational women who work tirelessly as change-agents to advance the profile of women in a traditionally male dominated construction industry. NAWIC aims to shine light on the opportunities available in the construction industry for women now, and into the future.

Queensland’s Kim Thomas, New South Wales’ Thu Pham, and Victoria’s Karina Swan and Katie Kandelaars are Aurecon employees who were recognised at the State Awards for their contribution to developing and inspiring women in their careers, as well as for their outstanding contribution to the construction industry.

Kim Thomas, Aurecon’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Leader, took out the esteemed Queensland Award for Innovation, which identifies women who actively implement innovative practices in the construction industry. Kim was awarded for her mentoring prowess and the numerous project leadership roles she has undertaken that have showcased her ITS expertise in delivering safe, efficient and reliable roads.

Kim has witnessed the success and improved clarity mentoring can have on the careers of young women. Her work with indigenous students is where she has seen the most inspiring outcomes.

“I am dedicated to lifting the profile of women, not only in the ITS industry, but in the sciences and engineering industry as a whole. I am also passionate about diversity in general. The more diverse our industry becomes, the more innovative we are,” said Kim. 

Thu Pham from Aurecon’s Buildings team was presented with the highly contested award for Achievement in Construction, Refurbishment and Fitout, which highlights achievement in applying exceptional construction processes to a project that has reached practical completion, irrespective of the project scale. This award recognised Thu’s efforts working on the 5 Martin Place project, in which her role as a structural engineer included designing the temporary supporting systems for the overhanging cantilevers of the new building during the construction phase.

The Victoria and Tasmania Young Achiever Award, which honours the dedication and excellence of an individual involved in the construction industry who is under 30 years of age, was awarded to Aurecon Civil Engineer, Karina Swan. This award is assessed on significance of contribution to the construction industry, leadership potential and involvement in community affairs.

On accepting her win, Karina said “I am very humbled to receive such a special award. The future looks very bright and I cannot wait to see what opportunities come along as I continue my career in the construction industry.”

Katie Kandelaars, Aurecon Associate of Environment and Advisory, received a well-deserved Commendation for Diversity and Inclusion at the Victoria and Tasmania State Awards, which recognises an individual or organisation who has demonstrated a significant commitment to increasing the diversity and inclusion of their workplace. Katie was praised for driving ‘Aurecon PRIDE,’ a diversity program to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) inclusion at Aurecon.

Charles Milazzo, Aurecon Sydney Office Manager, was delighted to see Aurecon well represented at this year’s NAWIC Awards.

“Diversity and inclusion are key strengths of Aurecon. We have such extraordinary talent and it is wonderful to see Aurecon women celebrated for their expertise, determination, and selflessness in helping others achieve their career goals. These are qualities that all employees should aspire to,” said Charles.  

Congratulations must also go to all Aurecon staff who were nominated for a NAWIC Award and continue raise the profile of women in construction.

Aurecon’s NAWIC Awards are coordinated by Aurecon Women.  Listed as an example of leading practice within the Australian Human Rights Commission Toolkit for Women in Male Dominated Industries, Aurecon Women is a formal network with the purpose of empowering women to realise and achieve their potential.
