Aurecon launches new safety app for pressure equipment

HazAPP in action

22 October 2015 - Aurecon launches HazAPP, enabling rapid hazard assessments of pressure equipment in accordance with Australian and New Zealand safety regulations.

The very nature of pressure equipment and the potential stored energy in an operating vessel or piping system can be a major safety hazard to workers and nearby communities if not properly installed or maintained.

This new app for iOS and Android enables equipment owners, operators, maintainers and designers to quickly assess whether their installation or modification of pressure and vacuum containing systems comply with New Zealand and Australian safety standards and regulations.

Derrick Lauchlan, Aurecon Associate Resources and Manufacturing, created HazAPP out of a desire to increase the awareness of the importance of these regulations and help prevent potentially catastrophic injuries associated with equipment that does not comply.

“After talking to our clients I discovered that there is a poor understanding of the pressure regulations. It is my belief that many new equipment installations and modifications to existing systems may not comply and therefore could be dangerous. HazAPP provides a quick and easy way to assess equipment and gives guidance on the regulatory requirements that need to be met to ensure the systems are appropriately designed, fabricated and installed,” said Derrick.

HazAPP’s simple interface steps the user through the hazard assessment calculation and produces an overall hazard level ranging from A (high) to E (negligible) in accordance with the Australian Standard AS 4343 required for compliance with Australian and New Zealand law. Users are then provided guidance on how to comply with local legal requirements, to ensure that the equipment has been correctly designed, fabricated, installed and tested.

By facilitating the correct assessment and guidance for pressure equipment compliance, HazAPP helps to avoid incidents that may result in:

  • Injury
  • Reputational risk
  • Lost work time
  • Damage to property and/or the environment
  • Fines and/or convictions

Early adopters of HazAPP are enthusiastic about its time-saving and workplace health and safety benefits.

“Thanks for putting me on to HazAPP. I’ve had a chance to try it out and what used to be a tedious exercise finding the documents, looking up the tables… can be done in seconds. The app is very simple to use and you don’t have to leave your seat,” said Greg Baker, Project Manager at Hendl and Murray.

HazAPP is free of charge and is now available to download on Android and iOS platforms.

The development of this product, from an idea to improve safety, demonstrates Aurecon’s vision to be Leading, Vibrant and Global.
