07 May 2015 - Aurecon, in an alliance with Leighton Contractors and South Australian company York Civil, has been appointed by the South Australian Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure for the design of the AUD896 million Torrens Road to River Torrens project.

Announced in a joint statement released by the Australian and South Australian Governments, the expansion of Adelaide’s North-South Corridor will provide motorists with a non-stop route along South Road between Torrens Road and the River Torrens, significantly improving travel times.

Aurecon Project Director Harry Turner said: “We are excited to work on this project, a key long term vision for South Australia, critical for both freight and commuter traffic.”

The project includes:

  • A 3 kilometre section of lowered non-stop roadway
  • Parallel surface (at-grade) roads along the length of the lowered motorway to connect local roads and arterial roads to South Road
  • An overpass of the Outer Harbor rail line
  • Three major road bridges, a pedestrian bridge and a services bridge over the lowered road
  • Various intersection upgrades
  • Improved cycling and pedestrian facilities
  • Landscaping and noise barriers
  • Major services relocation and accommodation, including HV power, sewer, telecommunications and gas

As part of the alliance, working with sub-alliance design partners W&G and Mott MacDonald, Aurecon will provide design management, detailed design and construction oversight services.

“We are using best practice Building Information Modelling (BIM) methods for this project,” Harry added.

Construction of the Torrens Road to River Torrens project is scheduled to begin in mid-2015 with the project expected to be completed in 2018.
