10 June 2014 - Innovative thinking around place and space has helped a small team of specialist building services engineers deliver Australia’s largest retail truck lift system to date.

Aurecon was engaged by CFS Retail Property Trust Group and Grocon to provide full vertical transport and building electrical services for the AUD 1.2 billion landmark retail development “Emporium Melbourne”.

The project team’s scope of works included developing the vertical transportation system with seamless access to all public and restricted areas as demanded by retail trading facility.

Also included, was the design of a truck lift system to facilitate all loading and delivery operations for the retail centre in Melbourne’s very short and narrow Caledonian Lane.

Emporium Melbourne co-owner, CFS Retail Property Trust Group, identified 24 – hour operations as its key requirement for the project.

Aurecon responded to the client’s demand by designing specialised truck lifts to provide clear access to service an underground delivery area complete with loading bay space huge enough to accommodate 22 semi-trailer trucks and 350 truck movements daily.

The 12.5 metre truck lifts were designed and assembled locally by Safetech, based in Moe, Victoria. With the exception of the imported motors, all materials were also manufactured locally.

With the construction zone situated in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, transportation and installation of the huge loading dock was a major challenge.

The truck lifts were fully assembled in the Safetech factory prior to being dismantled into three sections and transportation from the Moe to Melbourne (approximately 140km), for crane installation at the Caledonian laneway site over three consecutive days.

Aurecon’s pragmatic, client - focused solution has saved thousands of square meters of retail space which, in turn, has been leased and occupied as retail space, maximising the client’s return on investment.
