Leading geologists representing Aurecon at New Zealand Geotechnical Society Symposium

Aurecon

Aurecon's presenters will share insights and geotechnical expertise at the conference

15 November 2013 - Aurecon’s geotechnical team will present nine papers at the New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS) Symposium to be held in Queenstown, 20-23 November.

Looking at Australasia’s recent natural disasters through earthquakes and flooding, and the direct relevance to the geotechnical and engineering geology communities, the Symposium has the theme of “Hanging by a Thread - Lifelines Infrastructure and Natural Disasters”.

Aurecon’s Ground Engineering Leader, Charlie Shackell, says: “this is a great chance for us to share our expertise and involvement in emergency response and recovery.    As geotechnical engineers, we play a vital role in designing infrastructure to withstand natural disasters and are often first on the ground when it comes to emergency response”.

The Aurecon presenters will also be available at our stand throughout the symposium to discuss their papers further.

Some of the papers our team will be presenting:

Old Pacific Highway embankment collapse at Piles Creek, Australia – Highlighting the importance of effective maintenance and asset management of aging infrastructure
Presenters:  Charlie Shackell, Technical Director, Transport & Ground Engineering Leader, and Peter Retsos, Technical Director, Transport – Ground Engineering

Mitigating geotechnical risk of embankments aligned on mud flats – illustrated by the SH16 Waterview, Auckland, motorway widening
Presenter:  Gregory Pinches, Technical Director, Transport – Ground Engineering

Slope hazard assessment procedures; a closer look
Presenter:  Zoe Pletz, Engineering Geologist, Transport – Ground Engineering

Millerton Cutting - Assessment and mitigation of rockfall hazards on a critical supply route
Presenter:  Peter Forrest, Technical Director, Transport – Ground Engineering
