18 October 2012 - Aurecon has recently been appointed to provide detailed design services for the Otukpo Hydropower Station in Nigeria.
The Minister of Water Resources, Obadiah Ando, said the dam would ensure the provision of clean drinking water for the host communities and enhance food security in the region.
When completed, the dam will provide potable water for the community, deliver power generation and water supply for food production, as well as create job opportunities for the local community.

At the recent Hydropower Africa conference held in Cape Town, South Africa, Aurecon’s leading hydro specialists Bertrand Rochecouste Collet and Niels Nielsen presented on the latest project developments and technologies.
Bertrand Rochecouste Collet, Aurecon hydropower and dams expert, presented a case study on the feasibility of the Botterkloof and Merino II hydropower sites, located in South Africa. Following completion of the feasibility study, Aurecon has been appointed for detailed design and construction supervision of the Stortemelk (formerly known as Botterkloof) Hydropower Station.
Niels Nielsen, Senior Hydropower Advisor at Aurecon, teamed with Rik Hothersall from Hydroworks to introduce a new approach to small-scale hydropower, which uses a pre-designed, modular in-race turbine concept to reduce costs, whilst maintaining a safe and reliable mini-hydro project. “It is often difficult to achieve financially viable small hydro projects and maintaining plant reliability in remote areas can be a challenge if resources are limited,” Niels said.
“Renewable energy technologies such as hydro are offering security of supply in a world of increasing volatility and uncertainty around fossil fuels,” Blair added.
