21 December 2012 - At the Consult Australia, 2012 Awards for Excellence held 7 December in Brisbane, Aurecon received two highly commended awards.

This year’s Consult Australia Awards received 83 entries across nine categories. The Awards recognise the contribution made by members, such as Aurecon, to the sustainable development of the built and natural environment.

Aurecon’s awards were in recognition for innovation in the work undertaken on a major, CBD building development in Sydney, 420 George Street, and for the commitment to diversity across our business.

Newly opened mixed-use development, 420 George Street, Sydney achieved a 5 Star Green Star - Office As Built v2 rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, supported by highly innovative mechanical, electrical and vertical transportation systems designed by Aurecon.

Marek Tomaszewski, Aurecon Project Director said, "Implementing the right combination of green technologies to complement the building's design has resulted in significant energy and cost efficiencies while providing very comfortable conditions within the space."

Aurecon brought a number of innovative approaches to the design of the mechanical, electrical and vertical transportation services, including:

  • High efficiency decoupled central chilled water plant serving both retail and commercial mechanical systems
  • High temperature chilled water system serving the chilled beams
  • A hybrid mechanical system consisting of active chilled beams and VAV (variable air volume)
  • Increased indoor environmental air quality and air distribution
  • High efficiency lighting
  • High efficiency lifts
  • Extensive electrical and mechanical metering systems

"The combination of active chilled beams and low air temperature VAV provided a highly energy efficient mechanical plant while reducing the client's capital expenditure," added Tomaszewski.

The AUD 290 million mixed development is a new landmark building located in the heart of Sydney's CBD between Pitt Street Mall and George Street, consisting of four retail levels, 28 levels of office and two basement levels of parking. The commercial tower provides approximately 37 000 m2 of A+ Grade office accommodation while the retail podium provides for 9 000 m2 of multi-level retail.

The building is also designed to achieve a 4.5 Star NABERS energy rating and is currently trending well above design expectations after seven months of occupation.

Diversity at AureconDiversity recognition

The second award was for Aurecon’s commitment to creating meaningful diversity strategy. In 2011/12 we embarked on an ambitious programme to turn our diversity intentions into actions, directly linked to the organisation’s business strategy and taking into account our global model. This award recognised Aurecon’s commitment make its diversity strategy real for its people, and for the outcomes of this process.

Kathy Sacca, Aurecon’s Diversity Manager, said Aurecon’s diversity strategy focusses on addressing the adaptability and evolving needs of the organisation’s workforce.

“In 2011/12, we embarked on an ambitious programme to turn our diversity intentions into actions, implementing a diversity strategy that directly links to Aurecon’s business strategy and takes into account our global model,” said Kathy.

“The challenge was to develop, implement and measure a diversity strategy that matches our evolving external and internal stakeholder expectations.

“Measurements to date indicate we have made some real progress in creating a culture in which all staff feel respected and valued, whatever their gender, race or lifestyle choices.

“This award recognises Aurecon’s commitment to making our diversity strategy a reality for our people.”

Aurecon’s diversity strategy is an  ongoing initiative that will evolve along with the workforce and stakeholders.
