15 December 2011 - On a cool but dry Sunday, around 100 Aurecon clients and staff gathered to share a once in a lifetime opportunity to ride part of the 2010 UCI World Championship Course with elite cycling and Australian Rules Football superstars.

The Corporate Cycling Challenge, held on Sunday 4th December, was the first cycling event of its kind to be held in Australia. The unique event offered corporate teams the chance to compete with and against the cream of professional cycling and other sporting talent.

Emerging Australia star, Richie Porte, was Aurecon’s elite cyclist for the event and he was joined by other top professional cyclists and leading athletes from other sports, including Koen De Kort, Nathan Haas, Matthew Lloyd, CJ Sutton, Ryan O’Keefe and Shane Crawford to name a few.

“This was a unique and exciting event for everyone that participated,” said Paul Thorstenson, Chief Administration Officer.

“The feedback from our guests was absolutely fantastic and I think the enjoyment was increased due to this being an event where clients and Aurecon staff could join together and actually compete, apart from myself when I unfortunately dropped off the group and was left trailing at the back,” added Paul.

The format is a team time-trial event, with corporate teams of 8-10 racing together against the clock.

Setting out at three minute intervals, the teams compete for the Corporate Cycling Challenge winner’s time. Based on stage two of le Tour de France, each team’s result was measured by their 5th fastest rider’s time taken to complete the 15 km course.

With 24 teams competing in the Corporate Cycling Challenge, Aurecon’s teams filled four of the top eight spots including 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th.

“This was a marvellous event that threw our team members together at short notice and under some challenging conditions. By Sunday afternoon, we were already talking about getting fitter and trying harder at next year’s event,” said Bill Glasgow, Delivery Centre, Manager, Victoria. “It was a great relief that our pre-race practicing around Albert Park Lake and an extensive focus on Health and Safety resulted in a ‘Zero Harm’ outcome for all riders,” added Bill

For Brenden Macauley, Project Officer with the Barwon Water Alliance, one of our clients in Victoria, further training does not get any better than meeting face-to-face Australia’s first Tour de France winner Cadel Evans. Cadel, special guest to the event, made the day for the Macauley family by personally presenting Brenden with his 50th birthday present – a trip to watch the man himself in the 2012 Tour de France, culminating on the Champs de Elysees in Paris. Brenden remained speechless in the Aurecon marquee for the rest of the day.

“I’d like to congratulate everyone that played a part – either as a competitor, an attendee or as an organiser. The sense of teamwork gave the event a real buzz, as did the feeling of camaraderie amongst all of the competitors. The way the event brought us all together, starting with a client gala dinner back in November, transferred in to enjoyment and a sense of satisfaction, which was the perfect cure of aching muscles,” said Bill.

Enjoyment, exhilaration and fun for all – thoughts on the day

I have been on a high since yesterday and just had to thank you and Aurecon again for the invitation to yesterday’s event.  As a keen cyclist, it was by far the best corporate day I have ha d ever and a day I will not forget….especially with the help of a few photos of me and Richie, Matt Lloyd and the great Cadel himself.
Reynard Smith, Manager Major Contracts, SP AusNet

… thanks once again for inviting myself and JLL to take part in yesterday’s event.  Was a fantastic day, and despite being severely underdone, really enjoyed the day. A great effort organising everyone too …
Tim Farley, Director, Corporate Solutions, Jones Lang LaSalle

(We) would like to thank you and the rest of the Aurecon team for a wonderful day…We greatly appreciated the courtesy and hospitality extended to us.  Barwon Water was thrilled to be involved and I am pleased our cycling representatives held their own…I will write a piece for our intranet site.
Graeme Vincent, Media Manager, Barwon Water

Aurecon did a great job looking after us, and it was great to chat with Richard Porte and other celebs … And yes my legs were sore, which must mean I put in my best effort.
David Hamilton, Pipelines Manager, Shell

Thanks for a great day at the Corporate Cycling Challenge yesterday. I had a lot of fun, suffered horrendously out on the road and thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of the team ride. It was an impressive event, it showed off Aurecon as so much more than a mere engineering consultancy practice.
Andrew Barrett, Commercial Manager - Supply Chain Management CSC Australia Pty Limited

Awesome job yesterday … It was fantastic to see the numbers of Aurecon Cycling Kit being worn with such pride, enthusiasm, and skill of course, from staff and clients alike.
James Mundy, Owner Tri-Fitness (and Equity Partner in Corporate Cycling Challenge)

Again, thank you … for your outstanding support … we are thrilled that Aurecon are gold sponsors of what I believe will become the most unique, exciting and talked about corporate event in Australia!
Steve Greene, Event Organiser and Owner of CCC

Thank you for the opportunity to ride with Team Aurecon on Sunday. It was a thrill to meet so many of the pro's and to be able to race with Richie Porte…I can honestly say that your event was brilliant in many aspects.
