9 December 2009 - Global group Aurecon walked away with one of the construction industry’s top accolades at the 2009 Construction World Best Projects awards. Held annually, the externally judged “Best Projects” competition is hosted by Construction World magazine in celebration of excellence.
This year, the Central Terminal Building (CTB) at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg was named winner in the Professional Services category, a project Aurecon submitted in conjunction with joint venture (JV) partners AKi Consulting and Iliso. In addition, Aurecon was intimately involved in two of the other projects that excelled: the new Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) premises, which earned a highly commended in the Public Private Partnerships (PPP) category, and Freedom Park Intermediary Phase which won the Afrisam Award for Sustainable Construction. Representing very different types of building projects, these recognitions bear testament to Aurecon’s ability to provide professional technical services across buildings as diverse as heritage sites, airports and Government headquarters.
Improving passenger flow at SA’s ‘gateway to Africa’
With its massive Y-shaped columns and clever use of concrete and glass, the CTB is both striking and devoid of the heavy, boxed-in feeling that so many high traffic airports share. The CTB not only forms the central link between the International and Domestic terminals, but also links the multi-storey parking garage and new Gautrain Station at OR Tambo International Airport. Its completion sets a new benchmark for design efficacy, functional flexibility and construction quality in that it is purposefully designed yet still manages to impress those who enter its doors with breathtakingly clean lines and purposefully robust surfaces.
The completion of the new CTB is vital for the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup as the airport will serve as the key point of entry to and from South Africa, forming a literal ‘gateway to Africa’ for all tourists. Aurecon’s involvement in the project comprised the civil and structural engineering which included the implementation of a complex glass and aluminium façade system which is pivotal to the CTB’s visual appeal. In addition, Aurecon also provided wet services and mechanical engineering, including HVAC.
Aurecon enables an emblem of democracy
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) campus in Pretoria, a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project, boasts impressive structural steel formwork, thin stone cladding and woven ‘spider’ columns. Completed in just 22 months from when construction firstbegan in April 2007, it placed the professional team under immense pressure to produce economical designs within a very short period of time.
Aurecon was appointed as the lead consultant for the structural engineering of the building, in joint venture with Iliso and Palace Engineering Services. Inclusive of an imposing office building, new on-site guest accommodation and full refurbishment of the existing guest house in Waterkloof heights, Aurecon was responsible for 85% of all the structural engineering works, which included façade engineering, site supervision, heating, ventilation and airconditioning (HVAC) and the fire sprinkler systems.
Freedom Park: challenging the rules of symmetry
One of 11 Presidential Legacy Projects, Freedom Park was launched in 2000 as a response to a need identified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for symbolic reparation of past conflicts in the history of South Africa. Located on a 52-hectare site on Salvokop in Pretoria, the park has become a place where South African citizens and international tourists alike have found a space to reflect on the past and celebrate a beacon for the future.
Aurecon’s involvement at Freedom Park included the civil, electrical, mechanical, structural and wet services for Phase 1 which was completed in March 2004. In addition, a joint venture between Aurecon and BEE partner Leslie Madinga Associates (LMA), saw the companies awarded the tender for the design of all structural engineering services for all subsequent phases. Because of the strong interface between the structural and civil works on the Intermediary Phase, Aurecon was also appointed for the civil engineering component of this phase.
